Montegrosso - Church of Saint Stephen
A neo-Gothic jewel
The building is in neo-Gothic style, and its contruction was started in 1927 by the provost Don Giacomo Franco on the project by Eng. Giuseppe Gallo of Turin. Builders of the church were the brothers Torchio from Tigliole. It was inaugurated in 1930. The canonical house (1930-'34) and the bell tower (1950) equipped with eight bells were built later (the last three bells were blessed by Pope Francis in 2018 on the occasion of the parish’s 100th year); later on were realized also the staircase (1979) and the internal decoration (Prof. Freddi 1974 - restored in 2008). The interior of the building is 34 meters long and 20 meters wide. The side aisles house the chapels of Our Lady of the Rosary, Saint Joseph, the Sacred Heart and the Patron Saint Stephen.
The floor in polychrome marble of the presbytery (1974) is artistic, as well as the rest of the floor made in the Holy Year 2000. The organ, built by Giovanni Marelli of Milan, goes back to the beginning of the last century, and was restored in 2015. The main altar and the two balustrades of 1700 made of precious marble and coming from the primitive church are of high value, as well as two valuable paintings: one from the seventeenth century depicting the Sorrowful Virgin between St. Rocco and St. Stephen; the other from the eighteenth century representing the Virgin of the Rosary while praying for the souls in purgatory. Also interesting is the sacristy, with large 19th century walnut furniture recovered from the old church.
