Castagnole delle Lanze - The Municipality
The municipality and its main buildings
The municipality extends urbanistically in two main areas: the Old Town in the hilly village of San Pietro, characterized by eighteenth-century buildings, the beautiful Parish Church of San Pietro in Vincoli, the Church of San Rocco and that of the former Confraternity of the Battuti Bianchi, and the new village, developed in the early twentieth century in the location of San Bartolomeo.
In the heart of the town center, on the top of a small hill stands the parish church of San Pietro in Vincoli, in Ligurian-Piedmontese Baroque style, with a single nave plan, five side chapels and a large churchyard. Construction of the building began in 1681 and ended in the early 1700s. In 1771 Count Carlo Giacinto Alfieri had the current high altar, originally still in wood, built, and the marble balustrade. The Compagnia del Rosario, Sant'Antonio da Padova and San Giuseppe had the side altars built. Of particular value is the frieze that runs along the cornice above the presbytery and the choir, characterized by a profusion of gilded stuccoes where there are over two hundred putti, modeled in the most diverse poses including scrolls and festoons with flowers and fruit.
